Curtis Hansford, of Concept Cables in Blandford Forum, Dorset, has won the Distrupol PIC (Product Information Centre) prize draw and is the lucky recipient of two tickets to New York. He received his prize from John Brenchley of Distrupol at the Concept Cables offices on 4 October 2007. Curtis’ name was picked during late September by John Whitehead, deputy editor at Plastics & Rubber Weekly, from the hundreds of new registrants to Distrupol’s PIC on-line materials selection database since March 2007.

Concept Cables Limited, founded in 2003, is an independent insulated wire and cable manufacturer with extensive experience in providing cabling solutions for harsh environments and non-standard applications. From the outset, it has viewed Distrupol as a key supplier, particularly in terms of the distributor’s ability to advise on a wide range of polymer issues. The PIC has been especially useful in this context, providing rapid access to data sheets for grades currently in use and those considered as potential solutions.

Curtis Hansford, a cable design engineer who has been with Concept Cables from its foundation, says: “I always use the PIC to get our data sheets. I like that I can compare different data sheets side by side, even if they're not the same type of material or from different suppliers.” Concept Cables is currently increasing its manufacturing capability for sub-sea and pipeline inspection cables. According to John Kewley, the company’s managing director: “Working with Distrupol will be vital to the future growth of the company.”

Since its launch in April 2005, the PIC has attracted over 2,500 registered users. It was created specifically to help designers and processors in “fit for purpose” polymer selection, providing them with access to a searchable technical database with thousands of polymer grades in Distrupol’s portfolio. Of key importance, the PIC allows the user to compare grades and even polymer types presented in the same format, side by side on-screen, giving a considerable improvement over paper-based and many other screen-based systems. “The high number of registered users goes to show that, by providing customers with a unique and user-responsive polymer database, which can make a positive contribution to their competitiveness, everyone can be a winner with PIC,” commented John Brenchley.
