At Kunstoffe 2007, SABIC Innovative Plastics’ Automotive division announced new goals that build upon its legacy of pioneering high performance materials to solve auto industry challenges. The company continues to make progress towards industrializing recently developed lightweight engineered plastics, composites, and glazing technologies that can help cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions and reduce fuel consumption.

“SABIC Innovative Plastics is committed to its development of new advanced materials that allow customers to anticipate and capitalize on market opportunities, such as in automotive lighting, glazing, and environmentally progressive products,” said Gregory A. Adams, vice president of SABIC Innovative Plastics’ Automotive division. “Today our objective is to industrialize our newly developed materials that we’ve showcased in many different concept and demonstration vehicles this year so that our customers can utilize them in production. Our commitment to mainstreaming materials like Lexan* resin glazing and iQ* resin technologies will assist our customers in their drive to enable design, reduce weight, and utilize sustainable materials.”

SABIC Innovative Plastics served as a strategic supplier to General Motors in the design and development of the Chevrolet Volt, and supported Hyundai with the development of the QarmaQ with over 30 material technologies. Now, the newer technologies used in these concepts, such as Lexan resin glazing, have started on the road to industrialization in vehicles like the SEAT Leon, Honda Civic, and Chevrolet Corvette.

At Kunstoffe 2007, the company is featuring a wide range of high-performance and technologically advanced materials used on various vehicle platforms. These include Lexan polycarbonate resins with patented Exatec** coating, defroster and fractal antenna technologies for glazing, Noryl* resins for online-painted fenders and wire harness applications, and new high-heat Lexan and Ultem* resins for lighting applications. Not only do these materials enable automotive OEM’s to reduce vehicle weight compared with traditional metal and glass, but they also enhance design flexibility and lower costs through part consolidation and elimination of secondary operations.

SABIC Innovative Plastics is exhibiting at K’ 2007 in Düsseldorf, Germany in Hall 6, Stand D42.
