Neste Oil to participate in renewable diesel demonstration in Alberta, Canada
Neste Oil is participating in the Alberta Renewable Diesel Demonstration. A diesel blend using Neste Oil's NExBTL Renewable Diesel will be used to power heavy duty vehicles in the demonstration project which will be run for about ten months throughout the province of Alberta, Canada. Major sponsors of the Demonstration include the Governments of Canada and Alberta, and Shell Canada.
The Alberta Renewable Diesel Demonstration is Canada's largest study into the cold weather performance of renewable diesel. This demonstration goes beyond the laboratory to put renewable diesel through typical on-road use by trucking companies. The Canadian government has announced plans to implement a Renewable Fuels Standard requiring 2% renewable content in the Canadian diesel supply by 2012. This standard is dependent upon successful demonstration of renewable diesel use under a range of Canadian conditions. The Alberta Renewable Diesel Demonstration addresses this requirement.
The field testing is the second stage of the Demonstration, which also involved laboratory testing. NExBTL performed very well at the laboratory testing stage - exhibiting superior fuel properties. The Demonstration includes several types of renewable diesel manufactured from a variety of feedstock and processes. Over 60 trucks of various sizes are traveling across the province as participants in the Demonstration.
"NExBTL, with its superior cold temperature properties, offers great promise as a renewable diesel solution to Canada and other countries with cold climates." said Jarmo Honkamaa, Executive Vice President, Biodiesel and Deputy CEO of Neste Oil. "Neste Oil has extensive experience in the Canadian and US market with its iso-octane and gasoline products, and we look forward to bringing our renewable diesel technology to North America."
